My
Lighting Design Philosophy
- I believe that
people should look and feel good in a space that I design.
- My lighting design
should compose a clear visual system of importance and purpose.
- The lighting mood I
should be consistent with the use, function and design of the space
- My design should
incorporate the potential for change - change in mood, function,
season and time of day.
- My design should be
the most effective solution for the cost.
- My design should be
installed by craftsmen available to the project with equipment that is
available and dependable.
- My design should be
easy for the client to use and maintain.
- My design should
withstand the test of time.
My Lighting Design Methodology
- Never depend on a
single source of light for a space, use a variety of light sources and
have the ability to balance them to suit the needs at the time.
- Remember to provide
ambient light -- this is the light that makes us look and feel good.
- Poorly located task
lighting causes glare -- which makes the task harder to see. Making the
light more intense only increases the glare which makes vision even
worse!
- We perceive light
that reflects off surfaces. Color and texture on these surfaces impact
greatly on the amount and quality of lighting. Consider lighting when
you select colors and textures.
- New lamp designs
offer excellent lighting solutions to specific lighting problems.
Halogen and fluorescent lamps are compact, low maintenance and have
excellent light and color qualities.
- Selecting well
engineered fixtures will reward you with great performance. Fixtures
should be selected for what they will do to the light and the space as
well as for style.
- If you have to see
the light source of a fixture, make sure it is soft so as not to detract
your attention from more important features.
