Just as "location, location, location" is the key to real estate, content is the key to effective website design. Content is what conveys your message and is the key parameter used in search engines indexing sites. 

Website design is always a balancing act between 1) useful information, usually in text format, which loads quickly and 2) graphics, which spice up a page, but slow down the loading of the page and 3) other features such as Java scripts which can add a pleasing dimension to pages - or can ruin sites when they don't work. 

Regardless of who designed your site, make sure your website is designed to have a message that makes your point even without graphics - then see that the graphics are used enhance your written message. You can't make a sale or a get a lead if your visitors won't wait for your site to load, no matter how graphically enticing it is!
